The secret underground bathroom

Project type

Bathroom transformation

Date

February 2021 - April 2021

Location

Brighton

This kind of project comes around but once a lifetime.

A wonderful client with a vision and and usual location, in this case a big hole in the back garden that came with the purchase of the house, an almost useable space if it didn't leak.

We designed a roof to be as slim as possible so it didn't raise the level of the garden but also not impacting the overall ceiling height and have sufficient room for insulation. Not an easy task.
Our client sourced a reclaimed walkover skylight from an old department store in Brighton town which provided the natural light for the space. We laid an Indian sandstone patio with falls to the garden and the skylight merged seamlessly into the design.
We still had to solve a major issue if this was going to be a bathroom that worked. Condensation. We turned to our old friend Lime plaster, when applied in a moisture rich space it acts a bit like a sponge, the lime within the plaster absorbs moisture in the air, steam etc, and releases it back into the room very slowly as oxygen, as part of its carbonisation process it also absorbs CO2 and releases it back as oxygen making it carbon neutral and a sustainable building material. This helps with the problem of condensation and black mould.

When it came to the design of the bathroom this was completely down to our amazing client! Sourcing unique pieces from multiple places, the freestanding bath taking centre stage was a most difficult task as it had to be big enough to bathe in but compact enough to fit into the new space. The wonderful wash hand basin inspired by Victorian school bathrooms. Beautiful taps which we mounted on a reclaimed piece of oak and a bespoke shelf unit made from the original floorboards from the house.

The result speaks for itself! A truly unique space that not only looks amazing but also works as a bathroom.
